Antioxidants in Your Coffee Cup

Next to petroleum, coffee is the most traded commodity and it’s not exactly surprising. Everywhere you look, someone’s sipping coffee whether at the office, at the malls, in restaurants and even in homes especially on chilly mornings. Everybody loves the taste of this beverage but one thing that makes it even more endearing is the tradition of sipping a warm brew while enjoying a certain quiet and peace by oneself or in the close company of someone dear. Surely, coffee is more than just a treat for the taste. It’s more of a personal affair.

Back then, coffee was notorious for its stimulant properties which tended to make things difficult for people with heart condition. In fact, coffee caused very serious complications in those with heart ailments and such image of coffee had stuck in people’s minds for quite a long time. Recently though, these black aromatic wonders had started to turn things around to their favor.

Coffee being healthy is a hot topic these days and whether or not people are ready to accept it as a health drink is not even the issue. Research has proven that the beans are actually rich in antioxidants and that’s what’s making them the star of most health researches today. As an antioxidant, coffee is particularly famous for the theory that it prevents DNA oxidation. Ugandan and Columbian coffee are said to do this best while, in terms of brewing method, drip/filter and Italian brewing are found to diminish the antioxidant content of coffee the least.

In America, coffee is proving to be more than just a favorite pastime. It is now the number one source of antioxidants in the US diet according to a University of Scranton research. This finding is based on how much and how often Americans take their coffee, a research that led to figures much higher than what resulted from studies on other popular antioxidant sources such as chocolate, carbohydrates, tea and milk.

Aside from being antioxidants, coffee has also been found to inhibit gallstone formation and allergic reactions as well as improve conditions for asthmatic patients. It has also been noted to decrease low-density lipoprotein or LDL levels, also known as bad cholesterol, which leads to a host of cardiac diseases.

It’s amazing how the times could change the way people think. What was once considered harmful is now suddenly a lifesaver. Thanks to technology for allowing researchers to look closer into what coffee really is. Although it remains risky for people with heart ailments, the rest of the world can enjoy their morning brew guilt-free.
