Learn How to Develop Your Coffee Palate

To become a true coffee connoisseur, it is so important to develop your taste to a higher level. Obviously, many wine connoisseurs take the time to deeply develop their taste when it comes to selecting the best quality of wine, and you can do the same thing with your cup of Joe. No, not all coffee is weak brown water that comes from a diner, and you will be surprised at how many flavors in Java can develop when you take the time to practice your taste!

Some professional coffee tastings are called cuppings, which is comparative tasting so that you can sample different brews and compare the characteristics. To start out very simply and develop your palette, all you have to do is buy two very different types of coffee. You may want to consult with your local roaster or store that you purchase fresh coffee beans from to make sure that the beans that you purchase are very different in their flavor profiles. You then need to purchase two small French Presses because that is the best and freshest coffee brew method available to you. In summary, French Press coffee brewing does not use filters, so it will leave all essential oils within the coffee brew product so that you can discern the true flavor and taste.

Use the French Presses to brew two small cups of coffee if you are doing a coffee tasting for only yourself. Allow the cups of coffee to slightly cool so that you can better taste the flavors. Begin by tasting them alternately. You will take a few sips of one cup, and you will then take a few sips of the other cup. This is your time to think and decide how the tastes compare to each other. The easiest way to begin comparing is to focus on the textures of the coffee. Many coffees have different bodies, so one may feel heavier on your tongue then the other. Also, one coffee may taste sweeter than the other or have a brighter acidity or smoother finish.

It is also important not to read the labels of the coffee beans when you taste because you need a fresh mind to decide for yourself what types of flavors you are experiencing. It is also best not to go by the roaster’s description until you have already tasted the brew. It is important to relax and not worry about the specific coffee flavors that you are tasting. There are no correct terms, and the whole fun of developing your coffee palate is to decide what taste is right for you. You do not necessarily have to use the correct coffee terminology, and you will be able to decide what fruit, floral, or earth flavors that you taste on your tongue.

Developing your coffee palate is an exciting time, and it will allow you to better choose the right to brew for you on a daily basis. Take the time to sample a variety of different brews to determine which one is right for you!
