Just when we had thought that we had seen it all in long-distance calling, came another breakthrough that yet again made a mere possibility into a reality. Voice over Internet Protocol or VOIP is its name and revolutionary long-distance calling is its game.
Simply put, VoIP enables one to call from the telephone to a computer or vice versa. Basically, it converts analog audio signals to digital signals that can be transmitted over the Internet. The computer of the user will then receive signal that was first the kind that you hear on the telephone, to a one that he can hear over the computer.

3 ways of placing a call
Another advantage of using VoIP is that there are three ways to make a call.
1.) ATA or the Analog Telephone Adaptor is an analog-to-digital converter that allows you to connect your regular telephone to your computer which is connected to the Internet. This is most common way of placing a call under VoIP. It takes the analog signal from your traditional phone and converts it into digital data for transmission over the Internet. Many VoIP providers like Vonage include free ATAs. Although in some cases additional software and configurations may be loaded in some cases it is normally simple to use. Just get the ATA out of the box, plug the phone cables into the ATA and your computer, and with Internet connection, you’re ready to make calls.
2.) IP Phones are specialized phones with RJ-45 Ethernet connecters instead of an RJ-11 phone connector. They directly connect to your router and all the necessary software and hardware to make an IP call will be available.
3.) Computer-to-computer – Considered the easiest way, this type of VoIP calling only require both users to have an Internet connection and the necessary equipment like speakers, microphone, a sound card and of course the computer. Computer-to-computer calls are uncharged because they are part of the Internet subscription fee. VoIP is indeed a useful communication tool nowadays and several free softwares are available on the Internet. All you need to do is download and install it and it will be ready to use.
