Surviving the Busy Restaurant Shifts

As a manager or employee at a restaurant you have no doubt noticed just how hectic and busy the rush shifts can be. Often surviving them is extremely complicated unless you know exactly what you are doing. However, even for the most experienced restaurant worker a busy shift can seem like a nightmare. Learning how to take back control is important to getting the best results during your shift and leaving without losing your patience while at work.

The first step is always being on time, not only will this enable you to be certain that you arrive to work on time, but you will also be able to proudly say that you are not having to play catch up throughout your entire shift. Walking in late will put you into a very rushed and anxious state of mind and make it potentially difficult for you to catch up and stay on track for the rest of your shift. Additionally, being on time will allow you to really check up on the shift that you are taking over for to ensure that they have prepared you to be as successful as possible, rather than having to cover the slack that they might have left for you.

It is also a very good idea if you are a manager to be a bit early so that you can make sure you have ample supplies for the night, as well as spend some time looking over the schedule to see if anyone needs to be replaced. Coming in at the last moment, you will not have much time to handle these needs and could find yourself short on staff as well as product to serve to customers. Coming in a few minutes early will put you in a better position since you will be aware of these types of problems before they occur, rather than after everyone else has left.

You should also take the time to clear your head for a few minutes before you start working. Taking this time to yourself will allow you to push aside any problems that you are having, calm yourself and even completely gain your composure before it is time to start working with the customers. This alone can often mean the difference between a good shift at work, or one that ends in complete disaster regardless of how much restaurant experience you have.
