You have been in business for a few years now and it’s time to upgrade your telephone system, thing is there are just too many variables and the deeper you search the more confused you become. You hear people say plan your phone system for the next five years of your business, but you can’t even see clearly what’s on the horizon let alone that far out. Will your need to plan for growth or will your business stagnate and growth be slow? Do you need VoIP technology and if so why? Do the savings really amount to that much over a traditional PBX system?
That’s just the telephone system, that doesn’t even cover the services. Do you consider upgrading to a virtual attendant so your company seems larger than life and you have function and feature that best serves your client base? These and many other questions often stop small business owners in their tracks, after all a wrong move could saddle you with a telephone system for years that just doesn’t function to the level you need. Service Level Agreement (SLA) for the actual service can be tricky as well, there is a good chance you could be paying for services you don’t need or the price is right, but the quality is wrong.
One of the best things you can do is being patient, first step is to consider what you currently have and why you feel you need to upgrade. Is the telephone system really in need of replacing or is it the service that needs to be updated? Take into consideration what your needs are today, focus on those needs not what might happen years from now. Once you know what you really need start doing some research, what you need may change as you fine tune your direction based on knowledge gained.
Look for telephone systems that offer upgrade options should you grow, but keep the price low today and manageable. For services think basic, today that means dial tone, voicemail, hold, transfer, conference, etc. You may find that what you think you need really are wants more than needs. Keep your telephone system simple, don’t overdo it and don’t allow yourself to be talked into a phone system that really is outside of your needs. Ultimately you want your new system to enhance your business, not subtract from it. Taking the time to education yourself will pay well for you.
