Lucent Merlin Legend – Lucent Magix Phone Systems

The Lucent (formerly Bell Labs) Merlin PBX and phone solution were the default phone system installed in millions of businesses across the US and Canada, and their follow-on, the Magix voice over IP integrated communications server is a full on system capable of handling voice mail, email and more.

The Lucent Merlin Legend was the follow on to the mechanical 1A2 Key System, which was developed by AT&T pre-divestiture, and the Merlin was the first electronic switching service put into wide use with features like call waiting, call forwarding and voice mail services. The Merlin system, being all electronic, solved many of the mechanical line switch issues – which caused the prior systems to be very expensive, and was vastly more expandable. Many of the features we’ve come to take for granted on modern PBX systems, like centralized switching, and dial tone modulated frequency voice mail and telephone menu systems.

Not to be outdone, the Merlin phone systems were also the first major telephones made with printed circuits and four-line wiring (so that intercom systems could work in parallel to the telephony functions); even at a significant price premium for the time, the Merlin phones were significantly less expensive to install, and as the system grew in popularity, the price plummeted.

As technology progressed, Lucent Technologies (the former Bell Labs) had its capabilities updated, but the basic telephone system remained in place for over 20 years. Indeed, the major change to the Lucent Merlin Legend system was to enable it to work on Voice over IP systems

The Lucent Merlin Legend was eventually replaced with the Lucent Merlin Magix, but there are still millions of legacy Lucent Merlin Legend systems out there. Upgrading these systems to the latest capabilities demanded by modern businesses means that there’s both a demand for installers and professionals who can set up ‘new’ Merlin Legend systems, and who can take on old systems, maintain them, or disassemble them for parts if needed.

Your telephone system is what keeps your business functioning, and authorized Anaya companies can do a phased rollout as they expand your existing Lucent Merlin Legend network, or upgrade you to the Lucent Merlin Magix voice over IP system with full digital convergence. Getting the upgrade done is important. Having technicians who can show you the roll out of the plan for the upgrade, including times when parts of the system will be down, back up and tested is critical to making sure that expanding your PBX system doesn’t shut your business down for a few days.
