This review will cover and compare two different 2-line cordless phone systems which are roughly in the same class. We compare advantages and potential disadvantages of each phone system. Each of these 2-line phones are in the same price bracket but because the actual price of each phone will likely vary depending on when and where each phone is purchased this review won’t discuss or compare costs. For our purposes we will assume that the phones have the same cost, both are capable of being plugged into 2 separate phone lines and they both operate in the same frequency of 5.8GHz.
The first 2-line cordless phone we will look at is the Panasonic model KX-TG6702B. This phone has a very long list of features and includes all of the basic or standard features that you would expect in this class of 2-line phone. There is digital voice mail with up to one hour of stored messages. The phone also has an interesting feature where the tip of the cordless antenna lights up to indicate that recorded messages are present. This is a novel and useful feature as we could see from across the room that we had a message on this phone. The antenna light feature can also be used to silently alert to an incoming phone call. The manufacturer has also included a very high quality speaker phone in this model for use with conference calls or when hands-free use is desired. Surprisingly there is really very little audio distortion for the listener when this speaker-phone feature is used. And overall audio quality is excellent for this Panasonic cordless phone. We also found very little degradation in audio even when operating at the edge of the stated reception radius.
The next phone we will look at is the Uniden TWX977 cordless phone. This is also a 2-line phone with some useful and unique features. One of the first things that catches your eye with the Uniden is the color. This phone is bright yellow which some may find attractive and some will certainly be turned off by. This model’s primary claim to fame is the fact that it is a rugged cordless phone that can be dropped and even survive in water. The waterproof design makes this phone truly unique in this class as the phone can actually be submerged a few feet underwater with no damage. You can’t make calls under water, but that should be obvious. The phone also floats. The Uniden can also be used as a walkie-talkie on its own private network with other phones of the same model which makes it useful for large business like a car dealership lot. The phone also includes digital voice mail and most of the standard features you would expect.
Both of these phones deliver on being useful, effective 2-line cordless phones and would meet most users needs for this purpose. The Uniden would be a better choice for outdoor usage or a wet environment. The one drawback is that the rubberized outer shell that protects the phone does tend to degrade the audio quality for both speaking and hearing. If you don’t have a need for the rugged outdoor features of the Uniden then the obvious choice would be the Panasonic. The audio quality and features of this phone are as good or better than most, more expensive, cordless phones.
